The design of this clock represents the act of finding time, and solves the problem of time being buried in our daily lives. The system is quite simple, with a glass plate carrying magnetic fluid and a box that houses a mechanism for rotating the magnet. When the plate is moved onto the platform of the box, the magnetic fluid gathers in a spiky form in positions corresponding to the tips of the hands of an analog clock. The locations of the long, short, and second hands are shown by the positions of the magnetic fluid, enabling us to find the time. If the plate is left on the platform, the magnetic fluid moves as time goes by. If it is left even longer, the magnetic fluid turns into an ordinary black liquid and the time is no longer displayed.
この時計は「時間を探す」という行為をデザインし、「時間が日常に埋没している」という問題を解決しています。仕組みはいたってシンプルで、磁性流体の載ったガラス皿と、磁石を回転させる機構が収まっている筐体があります。皿を筐体の盤面で移動させると、アナログ時計でいうところの針先の位置に磁性流体がスパイクをたてながら集まってきます。長針、短針、秒針が磁性流体の位置によって示されることで、時間を探し当てることができる仕組みです。皿を盤面に置きっぱなしにしておくと、時間が経つのに合わせて磁性流体も移動します。さらにそのまま放っておくと、磁性流体はただの黒い液体となってしまい、時は示されなくなるのです。
Clocks are found everywhere in our daily lives. When we look around the room, we see that the time display function is incorporated in various places, from the liquid crystal screens of home appliances to personal computer displays. I felt that the experience of finding the time is precious, and created this clock. The concept is derived from the idea that I could make a ritualistic device for capturing the flow of time in our daily lives by becoming aware of the work and inconvenience that would be involved if we had to find out the time using a sundial, as people did in ancient times.
考えてみると、日常の中に時計はあふれかえっていて、部屋を見渡せば家電の液晶からパソコンのディスプレイにいたるまで時刻表時の機能は入り込んでいます。意識して時間を探る経験が貴重なのではないかと思い、この作品を製作しました。古代の人々のように、日時計で時間を知る行為の持つ手間と不便さが日常の中で時間を意識し、ただ流れてしまう時間をはっきりと意識するための儀式的な装置を作れないかということから発想を得ました。
Based on the concept of a clock that requires the user to take action in order to find out the time—as opposed to a clock that merely displays—I considered the kinds of mechanisms and materials I would need to realize the concept. With the initial concept being that the dial plate and hands would be housed in the box as a hidden mechanism, and that something should be made to react with the mechanism, I decided to use magnetism and a corresponding magnetic body. The magnetic fluid I have used creates extremely beautiful forms and textures when it reacts as a result of magnetism, and its motions are quite elegant, which is why I decided to use this material.
ただ表示される時計とは異なり、時間を知るためにユーザーがアクションを起こさなければならないというコンセプトを元に、どのような機構と素材でそれが実現出来るかを考えました。文字盤や針は隠れた機構として筐体に収まっていて、それに何かを反応させれば良いという中間スケッチを経て、磁力とそれに対応する磁性体を使おうと考えました。使用した磁性流体という素材は磁力に反応した時の形状やテクスチャが非常に美しく、また動きが魅力的だという理由で採用しました。
